It’s Not Easy Being Green

I recycle.  I teach my students to recycle.  But I never wondered where my recyclables went after leaving the curb - until I saw this!  The video is about recycling from Great Britain, but it made me wonder what happens to our stuff.  Like Kermit said all those years ago, "It's not easy being green!" 

Just Plain Fun!

A friend sent me this You Tube clip, and I couldn’t resist sharing it. It made me think about the ways we find to use technology that the original creators never envisioned. I’m sure the inventor(s) of the treadmill never anticipated this outcome! Hey, any rationalization for an entertaining bit of video!

OK, I Admit it – I’m a Geek!

I’ve become addicted to my Google Reader account and the way it keeps me updated on all of my favorite topics. Those who know me well know that I’m a bit of a tree hugger, a condition that seems to be “taking root” more and more as time goes on. Sooo, I’ve subscribed to an interesting blog about Dave Chameides who has resoved not to throw anything away in 2008. You can track his progress on his blog. So, onto the “geeky” part. I posted a comment to his blog in response to his mention of loose tea (I’ve been called a “tea snob)! I got a tremendous geeky tech thrill posting to Dave’s blog and seeing my comment pop up. What’s more, if you click on my screen name, you’re directed to my blog! To use Will Richardson’s terminology, I feel like I’m losing a bit of my “accent” in the digital world. I look forward to becoming more fluent in digital tools. And, for any of you who also happen to be tree huggers, check out this site about the Story of Stuff.

Tweaking

Hello! I figured out how to enable the RSS feed for my blog. So now anyone can subscribe to my blog feed! Yippee!

Secondly, someone asked if you can keep some or all of your del.icio.us sites private. You can, and the screen shot below shows you how (under the del.icio.us settings feature).

NPR’s Morning Edition has been running a series about the 10th anniversary of blogging. I’ve added several of the articles in the Shared Items folder of my Google Reader. If you like what you see, you can subscribe to my shared items through RSS.

In other 21st century news, Queen Elizabeth II has created a You Tube channel for the royal family and used it to broadcast her annual Christmas address. The address was also broacast on television for all Britains still living in the 20th century. Embedding of the video is disabled, but click here to be connected to the Royal Channel.

I’m intrigued with the whole concept of RSS feeds. Below is an informative screencast about Google Reader, where I have my account.

Learning Curve

Greetings from the learning curve! I think it’s a long one, because I feel like the more I learn, the more I need to learn! So far I’ve set up an account at Google Reader for RSS feeds. If anyone knows how to somehow attach my feeds to my blog and/or add an RSS option for others to subscribe to my blog, let me know! I found a list of keyboard shortcuts at Google Reader. And as of this moment, I learned how to insert a link into my post:-) I’ve also set up a social bookmarking accout with del.icio.us – it’s like ikeepbookmarks on steroids! I’m having a great time becoming literate in the ways of 21st century communication and thinking of how I can apply my learning to the classroom.
